The Downtown Façade program assists with exterior building improvements that address the appearance and condition of commercial, retail, and mixed-use buildings to preserve the unique character and historic roots of downtown.
Eligibility:
Must be the owner of the property located within the Central Business District of Waterbury.
Guidelines:
Grants will be available for up to $75,000 per façade.
All improvements must be compatible with applicable zoning codes, satisfy permit requirements, and conform to any other regulatory restrictions.
The online application process includes the submission of the following:
Current photographs showing the front, side and rear facades of the building.
Three quotes outlining the cost, description, photo and/or drawing of the desired awning. Each estimate should include the contractors Business name, contact person, address and phone number. The applicant should indicate their preferred vendor. If preferred vendor is not the lowest bidder, please explain why.

The following types of improvements to the façade of a building and/or business include but are not limited to:
Correction of Exterior Code Violations
Painting and Siding
Historical Lighting Installation/Restoration of Historically Significant Signage
General Exterior Repairs
Door and Window Replacement/Restoration
Trim/Cornice Replacement/Restoration
Removal of Security Grates
Historical Rehabilitation and Preservation
Display Window Renovations
Signage Improvements for business. No proposals for “box” signs will be accepted.
An outside improvement that will enhance outside (“Al Fresco”) dining.
A processing fee of $250 is assessed for each grant up to $15,000 and $500 for grants over $15,001. Fees are due when the grant agreement is executed and may not be payable from grant funds.
Application and Review Process
Applications will open February 15, 2024. Each applicant will receive confirmation of application receipt within 5 days of submission.
Oversight and approval committee will meet monthly to review and award grants on a rolling basis.
Applicants will be notified in 30-45 days on the status of their grant application and request.
