Workforce

The Waterbury Regional Chamber, in partnership with the Northwest Regional Workforce Investment Board (NRWIB), can assist businesses in obtaining On-The-Job Training and Incumbent Worker Training grants.  In 2003, the Connecticut General Assembly established five Regional Workforce Investment Boards in the state to conduct comprehensive planning, and coordinate regional workforce development policy and programs. With a regional focus, the Boards assess regional employment and training needs and priorities, conduct planning for and coordinate programs that address those needs.

ON-THE-JOB TRAINING GRANTS

For Your CT Business

What is On-The-Job Training?

On-The-Job Training (OJT) is a method of training new employees at your work site using other skilled employees as instructors.  The Northwest Regional Workforce Investment Board (NRWIB) gives businesses funds to provide OJT to WIA-eligible individuals to train them in a  skilled occupation.

How Can WIA-OJT Benefit Your Business?

We will reimburse you up to 50% of your new employee’s starting wage to offset your training costs.  Reimbursements last from two to nine months depending on the complexity of the job and skill level.

  • We design an OJT program customized to meet your needs
  • Your new employee is trained for your specific work requirements

Who can be hired under the WIA-OJT program?

You may select from a group of WIA-certified individuals who are enthusiastic about learning new career skills on the job.  These individuals are building new job skills because their jobs were lost as a result of increased imports or shifts to off-shore production.

What are your responsibilities as the employer?

You offer full-time employment and provide on-the-job training.

What are the Northwest Regional Workforce Investment Board’s responsibilities?

  • We pay you the agreed upon OJT reimbursement monthly
  • We refer WIA-certified workers to your OJT openings.
  • We provide ongoing employer and employee support
  • We assist in completing the minimal required paperwork
  •

Incumbent Worker Training

What is the financial incentive for trying new, innovative training for my workers?*

The grant equals 50% of your training project or activity.  For example, the grant would equal $10,000 for a training program that costs $20,000.

What kind of training is eligible for these grants?

Eligible training for workers must involve significant change to improve the profitability and global competitiveness of your business.  These changes include new innovations, new technologies or new production equipment.  Such training may include lean manufacturing, Six Sigma and updating ISO 9000.

What kinds of businesses are eligible for these grants?

Healthcare, Advanced Manufacturing, Finance and Information Technology, Retail, Creative Industries, Maritime and Construction.

How does a business qualify for a grant?

Given the limited amount of funds, priority in funding is given to high growth work organizations.  Such organizations are committed to continuous improvement,  training front-line workers, providing a safe and healthy workplace as well as providing wages and benefits that exceed industry average.* Up to $3,000 per participating employee

Is a lot of Paperwork required to obtain these grants?

Paperwork is minimal.  A Northwest Regional Workforce Investment Board Consultant will service your grant.
